Phil: Hello and welcome to this Photo Answers video review on Cannon’s latest DSLR the EOS1000D. As you can see it looks very similar to older models.
Bob: It looks exactly like the old models.
Phil: Okay. Good point Bob there, if it isn’t broke don’t fix it. That also means that the grip is pretty small.
Bob: Well, yeah, it is extremely small. In fact, if you can see now, it suits up in my hand. My little finger is poking at the bottom, which isn’t particularly comfortable if you’re going to spend the whole day shooting. So what I was suggest doing is if you’re gonna buy this camera, get the extra vertical grip, which is the same one from the 450D, buff the camera a little bit, lot more comfortable to use.
Phil: Good point Bob. You notice at the back of the camera has got standard 2.5 inch screen which is pretty similar to most of its competitors.
Bob: But, 450D got 3-inch.
Phil: Alright, good point. But this is also, you got live view now, the 400D that its replacing didn’t have.
Bob: Yeah, that’s true. The live view system on the camera isn’t particularly refined. It’s a little bit clunky, isn’t it?
Phil: Yeah, it’s not a very smooth operation.
Bob: I think if you’re coming from a compact.
Phil: It’s gonna be a bit of a shock.
Bob: It’s a big shock, this isn’t the same thing. Live view on here isn’t the same as on the compact.
Phil: Definitely not, no. But what you will see is the new image stabilization kit lens. So, we got image stabilization for the first time on a budget Canon model, so it’s a similar system to Nikon’s in lens as well.
Bob: But interestingly, the rest of the manufacturers are actually putting image stabilization in the camera. So, which one do you think is best?
Phil: It’s a tough one. We hear stories from either side of the fence really. Some manufacturer saying in lens is better, other manufacturer is actually saying in camera’s better. But it’s really down to you how you gonna go on with it. It’s hard to tell which one is the better one.
Bob: Less sure, if you like it, just go for it. So, who’s gonna buy this camera Phil?
Phil: It’s a tough one Bob. I think if you come from a compact, it’s a very tempting proposition, it’s Canon’s cheapest DSLR to date, and it’s quite a tempting proposition. You got the SD cards. So if you got a stock of SD cards from your compact, you’re already there aren’t you.
Bob: Exactly, then you don’t have to buy extra CF cards and increase the price of the kit. But what about…
Phil: 450D?
Bob: …that’s what I was thinking, oh yeah, well done, thanks Phil. It’s only a little bit more expensive isn’t it?
Phil: Yeah, it’s got a better specification, better resolution at 12.2.
Bob: Bigger screen.
Phil: And it’s only a few quid more isn’t it?
Bob: I go for the 450D.
Phil: Yeah, I think that’s what I’ll do as well, and if you’re on a budget as well, then the Sony Alpha A200 and Nikon D60 are also very tempting cameras to get to.
Bob: Spot on. And yeah a little bit more refined perhaps.
Phil: Yeah, I probably say so.
Bob: Just a little bit more interesting.
Phil: Yeah. This camera is good but it’s probably what you call the fallen day of Canon.
Bob: Good call, yeah.
Phil: Yeah, it’s a good camera, but it’s just a little bit dull, does everything well, don’t get me wrong. But there’s just nothing there really is there?
Bob: So, what’s the rating gonna be Phil?
Phil: I don’t think it deserves a five.
Bob: It’s not a five. It’s better than average, or common three.
Phil: Yes. So we’re looking at a four?
Bob: A four?
Phil: Yeah, so our Photo Answer’s video verdict on this EOS 1000D is a Photo Answers rating four.
