In order to set the white balance, first you need to make sure that you are in the one of the creative modes. Turn your mode dial to anyone of these modes here and that will allow you to set the white balance.
All the automated modes right here, choosing auto white balance for you, the reason why I do not like auto white balance is because while it is okay out doors and daylight indoors underneath text and lighting, it is really not going to produce very good color. So choose the program mode for example, press the WB button here then use the right of left navigation buttons to choose the appropriate white balance settings.
Out doors and the day light I recommend using day lights if you are in shade or whether it is a cloudy day you can choose one of this options and this will help warm up the tons in a cool cloudy or shady situation. If you’re indoors like using tungsten most indoor lighting is tungsten and if it is fluorescent lighting then go with fluorescent. Now, if you are using a flash in order to illuminate your subjects, you can use the flash options. And if you’re doing product photography for example and you are under con tolled lightning you can choose either the tungsten or fluorescent if that is your lighting condition, or if you want to be much more accurate, you set the customs white balance.
In order to set the costume white balance, you can choose any of the white balance options, you need to take a picture of a white piece of paper or a gray card, gray card are specifically made for this purpose and you can find them at any professional camera store. It can be just pretty expensive, so normally I use a regular white sheet of paper. I place it in my scene with the light I am using shinning on the piece of paper and then I will just take a picture of the piece of paper.
You do not need the piece of paper to fill in the entire frame; you can just have it fill in a small pushing in the center. Once you have taken the picture, just press the menu button, and choose the second record tab and move down to costume white balance, press set and select the picture with the white piece of paper. Or just press set and move over to okay and press okay, and press menu, then I need to go and change the white balance to press the white balance. So I will press the WB again move over to custom.
Now this have been calibrated to the lighting set up that I have used, press set and now all the following pictures will be calibrated to my current lighting conditions.
