Captain Hook Cocktail Recipe
Welcome to Common Man Cocktails, I’m your host, Derrick Schommer. Today we’re going to do something, a little bit different. This is actually—we’ve had request from people asking, “Can you show us how to make something with red bull?” Typically, everybody says, “Well, make a, you should do a show of red bull and vodka? Realistically, red bull and vodka is red bull and a little vodka. It’s, to me, that’s not really a cocktail. Anything where you just put vodka into soda to make yourself get drunk is, it’s really just that. So, what were going to try and do is mix it up. We’re going to do some Malibu rum, which is a coconut flavored rum. They’re standard original recipe. We’re going to float some Goldschlager on top of it get some cinnamon taste. And were going to use our red bull.
We’re going to go with the high ball glass and I think that’s all we need. It’s still more complex than the red bull vodka. So, let’s put some ice in our high ball. That should do, about two-thirds full. Now when I’m going to stir this, that’s where I’d just going to go full on. It’s going to start by, a little sticky, throwing in our two ounces of Malibu rum over the ice, one, two. Now if you’re not a fan of red bull, and just red bull in general, this actually might not be so bad. As we can attest to it here in the show, you’re not a fan of red bull by itself, it’s got a weird taste to it. It’s citrusy. I don’t know, it’s just, it’s weird. If you’re not a big fan, what you’re probably going to want to do is mix it with alcohol. It drowns away some of the weird red bull flavor. Now you know, it’s dangerous, the small container says it stimulates metabolism, so perfect for drinking. Put in some alcohol, it’s kind of going to bring you down, you have your red bull to give you those wings.
So let’s pour it in. You just fill the cup. Leave some room; you don’t want to make a mess. That looks pretty good right there. You could already see the carbonation, which is starting to form and mix with the coconut rum. Now, what we’re going to do is float one quarter of cinnamon schnapps. So, there’s a couple ways to do it. You should just be careful about it. Pour it down the side of the glass, if you could tip it, in this case it might be a little dangerous. Let’s look for, we have a spoon around here, right? Here, we’ll take this spoon. We’ll just brace the side of the glass, keeping all the liquid, but just against the glass itself. And we’ll just float that right across, just so it doesn’t break the surface. It’s not impressive per se. We’re not doing it for a fact. We’re doing it for a specific taste structure. I guess that’s what we should call it. It’s going to give you the initial impressions of the cinnamon which will, kind of kills some of the sweetness from the red bull itself. So it doesn’t look very dangerous, you can’t even see the alcohol. You can see some crazy floaties in there but nothing too intense. Let’s give it a try.
You have to really fight the taste of the red bull. ‘Coz the cinnamon immediately coats your mouth which is kind of cool and then there’s the coconut flavor makes it almost taste like tropical. The end result is it’s not red bull and vodka. It’s a caffeinated tropical beverage. You can’t go wring with a caffeinated tropical beverage plus it looks cool ‘coz of the golden color. Simple to make, you know, besides floating the cinnamon schnapps. It’s not too difficult. Let’s try it again. Making a, I think this could go down pretty quick. Even if you’re not a red bull fan, you should probably give this a try. Juts to see what it tastes like, you see if it does kind of curve the edge of the odd red bull taste. If you really like red bull, this is a no-brainer. This is the Captain Hook. Not a bad recipe.
