Caramel Dream Pie with Heath Bar Topping Recipe
bettyskitchen
Hi I’m Betty. Welcome to Betty’s Kitchen. Today we’re making caramel pie and I think
that we really love this recipe because it’s so little trouble and it makes such great pie.
What we’re going to do is take 1 can of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed milk and this
is just your regular size 14 ounce and I got the fat free can. You don’t have to do that if
you’re watching your fat then this is a good idea it’s not going to hurt the pie.
What I need to do is to pour that into a 2 cup glass measuring dish. It doesn’t have to be a
measuring dish but it has to be something like pie racks because it is going to have to
withstand some heat because what I’m going to do now is cover the top with aluminum
foil and I’ll just cut this out because you don’t want it going all the way down. Cover this
with the aluminum foil and then believe it or not place it in a crock pot.
So we put this down on a crock pot. I’ll be pouring some hot water in. Now this is very
hot water. You don’t have to boil the water but it should be very hot water and we’re
going to pour it in to the level that I see that the sweetened condensed milk has come to
so I have 2 cups right here and that doesn’t do it so another 2 cups. You can probably see
the stain coming off the water. It is hot water and this almost makes it. I’m going to get a
little bit more.
I happen to have any plastic material on my sink where I can get hot water for making hot
tea or hot chocolate really quick so this is something I need really quick and I’m going to
just use a lot in. Pour that in and now this is reaching the level to which our sweetened
condense milk is poured and that’s the beginning step and there’s not much left to do. I’m
going to put a lid on here, turn this to low, it is plugged in, and it’s ready to go. I wait 9
hours and then I’ll come back and I’ll see this all caramelized. It would be a gorgeous
caramel pie.
It has been 15 minutes short of 9 hours since I put that Eagle Brand Sweetened
Condensed milk in the crock pot so we’re going to take a look at it I haven’t looked at it
all day. It has got that water around it remember so we’re going to take up that hot lid and
then be very careful reaching down in here. I don’t want to do that left handed. I’m going
to turn that around and then grab the handle and pull that out and it looks quite different
from what it did when it went in there.
See that nice caramel color. I think even though there’s going to be stain in here I’m
going to ease this off. Why don’t you take a look? See that and that will have a wonderful
caramel flavor. We’re going to do more with that so I’ll see you back in a few minutes.
Actually I’m going to let this cool so I’m probably hurry that up a little bit in the
refrigerator but for you it had just been a second. I’ll be back.
We’re going to finish up this caramel pie and what I have here is a ready made graham
cracker crust. You can buy these that have reduced fat or regular. This one happens to be
regular. I just have it moved where I picked up at the grocery store but we did do fat free
sweetened condensed milk and here’s what it looks like after it had a chance to cool
down and was put in the refrigerator for a few minutes in order to let it kind of jell up.
You want that consistency so that when you pour it over the bottom of your pie crust
you’ll be able to spread it out. You don’t want it all runny and or it would permeate the
pie crust and actually ooze among the bottom of that metal tray. That will not be pleasant
at all in terms of cutting a piece of pie so we want this nice and jelled up and it just makes
a wonderful pie filling and its’ just one ingredient.
If it’s just the Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk and we didn’t have to do any work
with it than open the can and put the water in the crock pot and also the covering with
aluminum foil. They would just wait 9 hours and let it do it’s magic and this is what you
get so on top of this we’re going to put some whip topping you can use fat free or light,
sugar free, any variety you want this happens to be regular.
Again it’s going to have a hand I don’t want to finish up this pie for you to show you
what it looks like but if you’re cutting down on calories or cutting on your fat then just
make the substitution it will make maybe a slight amount of difference but you can see
from the look of the caramel that the fat free element did not affect the way that came out
and I have already tasted it and it’s very good, its super good in terms of caramel flavor.
So you want to just ice it up with some whip topping and you can be as fancy as you want
to with this. Swirl it around however you want but you’ll come up with something like
that and you may want to use that whole 8 ounces. When you finish with that one nice
thing to decorate this with is a heath bar. Now this is toffee and this one happens to be
frozen because I have one that looks just like it that I put in to my kitchen chopper and
chopped up. It was easier to chop frozen.
So now that I have this chopped up I’m going to just sprinkle these heath bar bits along
the top and it makes a wonderful garnish for this caramel pie. Can you imagine an easier
pie to make than this, one ingredient for the filling and basically not much work to do,
wait on it a little while, spread it with whip topping and then top it off with some bits of
heath bar and it looks luscious.
