Male 1: That is because newborn eyes are not yet fully developed, they can only focus but 8-14 inches away from there face, which makes sense because that is how far away their mom’s face is when they are breastfeeding.
Male 2: Right, but they can recognize face almost from the moment they are born. Which means it is important for dad to get in there too and get close right in that range with the baby so you can bond as well, you might scare the baby at first if your daddy Brad but you got it, you got to do it.
Male 1: By 4 to 6 months, they can focus and also they can track movement and they have also started to develop color and dept perception.

Male 1: Yes, and you know what is even more discouraging, only 21 percent of the pre-school age children in the US actually have a vision screening. And only 14% of those got a proper eye exam.
Male 2: So, when should parents get an eye exam for their kid?
Doctor: The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, all recommend that your first normal pre-school eye exam is around age 3 to 3 ½ and that is an important exam because you can get a subject divisional on a child at that age, between 5 months and age 3 is a normal period where the eye should all be straight, there is no delayed development, the range is normal. If there is anything suspected, they should see a pediatrics ophthalmologist immediately. Our assessment of visual acuity in normal infants is objective and we use a system called fixation patterns where we study that motility or the balance of the eyes based on how they fixate on target, this targets as you see in my office is puppet shows, luvies and we do tasks and if I ask her straight, that is fine. At a pre-school eye exam at the age 3, they can reads subjectively and that is the first time they can tell you what I can see. Now, if for instances we find a problem with that age, we can patch for lazy eye or amblyopia. The visual system is plastic and they can come and go up to age 6 but then there is atime frame. In humans where the maturation process is mature and that somewhere between 6 and 9, so we still treat infants. But after 9 we do not really try to do anything because we know the visual system is mature at that point.
