Caring for Your Body After an Abortion

Kendall: I am Kendall from Austin. After the abortion what do I need to do to take care of myself physically?

Dyan Aretakis: Okay Kendall, some women after an abortion may take a day or two to rest at home that's not always necessary. You are going to be given some medication. It's very important to follow the direction on those. The medication might be for the bleeding, or it might be for pain, if you have any. And there also might be some medication that you are given to prevent infection. So please follow the instructions on those.

Now if you have any problems like really heavy bleeding, really severe cramping, or a temperature over 100, you do need to contact the physician that you saw for the abortion procedure. You will be asked to avoid intercourse until you come back for your follow up and you'll be asked to avoid putting anything in the vagina like tampon when you go back for your two to three week follow up you'll be given opportunity to start on a birth control method. So I hope you will follow up on that as well.
