Hi, this is Pres on vitaminCM.com and today we are going to talk about using portable applications on a USB drive. I am at the website PortableApps.com and there are numerous different applications that you can download if you click on applications. There is all different kind of applications, there is once for web development, there are games, internet tools, music and video, office files, and just basic computer utilities. What I want to do though is download the entire suite so if I click on suite there is a whole bunch of different suites, there is the standard, and there is a lite one and some like super lite ones. I am going to take the biggest one because that has most of the applications that I want so put download and I want to save the file to my hard drive.
Once the file is downloaded to your computer, you can install it onto the USB drive so I have a USB drive in right here and it is listed as the iDrive on my computer. So double click on the install file and pick out where I want to place it, so I will go to that iDrive which is my USB drive and I will click install. Once it finishes installing, you will notice on my USB drive that I have a folder called PortableApps and then the route of the USB drive. There is an icon there, that says start PortableApps so if I double click that, it will open up the PortableApps launcher and here are the applications that were installed as part of the suite and if I go to like one of these open office applications such as writer which is their equivalent of a Microsoft Word, it takes a couple of seconds to open up and it says ready to go so you can do whatever you want and if I could save stuff back to the USB drive or if I could save as, go to my computer, you will see I have all the drives on my computer so I could save it to my local computer, save it back to the USB drive and take it with me.
Now, we downloaded a certain amount of applications and installed them with this suite. There are also plenty of other applications that you can install if you notice inside the USB drive; there is a PortableApps folder and then inside of that folder are the names for the applications that I have installed now. If you look here, they match up. You can easily install new applications simply by going back to the PortableApps site, click applications and there is just a whole list of them here. The one I want to install it right now is notepad++ so I will just download the file and then just open it up and click next, make sure that when you are going to install it, that you are inside of the USB drive and then inside of the PortableApps folder and then the new folder named after the application and they are already defaulted because they are already, so click install and this is a small application so it only takes a couple of seconds to install, click finish and now if I go back to the USB drive.
I will click start PortableApps again so double click that and when it opens, you notice that new application is installed, notepad++ and I click it, it takes a second or two and it opens up. Now, as easy as it was to install applications on your portable drive, it is even easier to remove them. If you look here at the list of applications that I have, one of them is this Sudoku game and I do not really like that game so I am just going to click on the folder, hit delete and if I restart the USB drive, you will notice, it is no longer there. So that is it, install them very simple, uninstall them even more simple and if you go to the PortableApps websites, there is lots and lots of them there. If you notice, they have XAMPP which I covered in the previous article on how to set up a web server that has a apache, mysql, php, and some other interesting stuff. You can install this instead on your computer; you can install onto your USB drive and take your server with you anywhere that you go so these are pretty nice handy tools that you can use with your portable drive.
