Now we are going to go over the actions that a player can take at a poker table and there are five actions that every poker player must know. They are checking, betting, calling, raising and folding. In the course of your poker game you will probably utilize all five of these tools. Now to explain how all of these five tools work, I am going to deal a miniature form of poker that is high card and I am going to deal you in as well to help along the game.
The player with the highest card face down is going to win the money in this hand. Our first player to act is Henry, he looks down and sees that he has and he decides to, he taps the table. When a poker player taps the table they are saying, "I check." That is I have chosen to pass my turn to the next player. I don't want to put money in the pot yet. First I want to see, what everyone else does. Now we come to you the viewer and you look down at your card and see that you have -- you are going to want to bet that is put money into the pot and wager that you have the best hand.
Allison looks down at her holding and sees that she has and decides to raise. She has decided that her hand is probably the best and wants to get more money into the pot to win. She has put $2 into pot raising the bet from $1 to $2. I look down at my hand and I don't like my card at all. I am going to fold, that is put no money in the pot at all. I simply throw my card away and have no interest in the hand. The action now comes back to our first player Henry. He has decided to call, that is he has matched the bet of $2, but he is not going to make it more to play. The action comes back to the viewer and you decide to.
