This is phone arenas video review of the Casio Excelim C721 available through Verizon Wireless. The Excelim is flip style phone with a small LED display on the front and a 2.3 inch QVGA display on the inside. Located on the left is the micro SD card slot and connectors for the desktop cradle and on the right is a charging port and control buttons for the camera and music player.
One of the main features of the Excelim is the five mega pixel auto focus camera with dual LED flash. You activate it by simply rotating the display and pressing the camera button which uses the display as the view finder. The buttons across the top will control the zoom and also different camera functions such a the best shot mode, image stabilizer and resolution. The camera operates fast and will only take about 1.5 seconds to focus on a subject. The Excelim produces above average pictures with good color representation and modest saturation but with did notice that corners of the images were slightly blurry especially the bottom left corner.
We believe this could be a slight lens defect, what surprised was when comparing the images from the Excelim to the NV Touch and Samsung Omnia, between the three models, the Excelim would rank second as a produced better images than the Omnia, however the NV Touch had finer detail and images didn’t look as soft. One down side is at that the Excelim cant record videos in VGA resolution which the other two phones can do. Another unique aspect of the device is that its resistant to water, humidity, salt fog, rain drop, vibration, dust and solar radiation. We placed the Excelim in water and dropped it several times and there wasn’t any noticeable damage.
This is useful if you work in a construction site or you need a phone that is extra durable. The call quality was average and about the same as the Casio Boulder but the reception could have been better. In the end the Excelim is a nice device and we like having the built in five mega pixel camera with optical zoom but it still isn’t a replacement for traditional digital camera.
