Causes and Dangers of Food Allergies
Dr. Jim Sears: Because these allergies can be deadly.
Dr. Travis Stork: Absolutely.
Dr. Jim Sears: And I’m going to show you why. For food allergies, whether it’s peanuts or eggs or whatever, when those substances get into the body, whether it’s in the respiratory tract or digestive tract, those allergens get in into the immune system and they produce these antibodies that are against peanuts or whatever. And they attach to mast cells which on exposure release that histamine. It goes all over the body. It causes the itchy eyes, the runny nose, hives, and things like that or the deadly reaction which is anaphylaxis.
Dr. Travis Stork: So, airway can be deadly.
Dr. Jim Sears: Right.
Dr. Travis Stork: But swollen airways, swollen tongue, truly can be deadly.
