Gerren: Hi! My name is Gerren, I live in Essex, Vermont, and my question is, what causes heartburn, and what's the best way to treat it? Sheryl Pfeil: Gerren, heartburn refers to the reflux of stomach acid up into the esophagus, and it creates a burning, a very uncomfortable sensation, therefore the term Heartburn. Now there are many ways to treat it. Certainly some of the things that we recommend lifestyle-wise and diet-wise include things like limiting fatty foods, limiting alcoholic and caffeinated beverages not over-indulging, those kind of things, but there are also some very effective medications that have really revolutionize our treatment of heartburn.
