Causes of Baldness in Men

Anthony: My name is Anthony from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. What are some causes of baldness in young men?

Michelle Hanjani: Well, Anthony, there are two major causes of hair loss in young men. First is the ever-present male pattern hair loss which can begin in young men. It can begin in the teenage years around puberty, although more commonly it begins in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. So that's the most common reason.

The second most common reason would likely be something we call Alopecia areata. It's much less common than male patten hair loss, but Alopecia areata is a condition where a person's own immune system for whatever reason has started recognizing their hair follicle stem cells. So that means the cells that grow a new hair every fresh hair cycle are somehow recognize by the immune system as a foreign cell and your immune system destroys them and often, this is a transient process. It may just last a few months to a few years and then your hair recovers, but then unfortunately a smaller minority of young man, this can be more long lasting and can be to permanent hair loss.
