Tamee: Hi! My name is Tamee. I've a question, I was wondering what causes varicose veins, and how do I prevent them from appearing? How do I get rid of them?
Dr. David Dawson: Hey, that's a great question. The leg veins that carry the blood back to the heart have small one way check bales, when those check bales fail there can be reverse flow or reflux that increases the pressure in the veins causing them to dilate, elongate that's a varicose vein; that pressure also cause the aching pain.
Genetic factors can contribute to formation of varicose veins both men and women can get varicose veins, but women often have problems with varicose veins during or after pregnancy.
We recommend the three ease of exercise, elevation and use of elastic compression stockings to control symptoms of varicose veins or to reduce new vein formation. Treatment options are individualized to each patient. We use physical examination, ultra sound and other techniques to determine what the nature of the problem is and we can treat with Sclerotherapy, injection of solution in the small veins to cause in the scar shut with outpatient surgery using minimally invasive techniques to remove veins, or we can close a refluxing vein using radio frequency ablation or a laser catheter in the vein to cause it scar shut.
For many people, there are nice options.
