For Valentines Day, I love to make something unexpected and for me that’s my Cava and Blue Orange Cocktail, very refreshing.
For me that combination of the fresh citrus and dry sparkling wine is just perfect for any occasion but the brilliance of the blood orange really makes it appropriate for Valentines Day and we simply achieve this fabulous cocktail by splitting a fresh plain orange or two. I really like to get the maximum amount of citrus out of this. Over a little strainer into a bowl, really get that juice and all that delicious red pulp making a cocktail always has a great payoff because it generally doesn’t take that much work and it's really rewarding when you put together something special.
So when done juicing I just like to press through and you can see they get a little bit of pulp. I really squeeze that pulp through the strainer, leaving behind any pits and, oh, my God look at this color. So just combine that blood orange juice with just a touch fresh lemon juice and a splash of bitters which is just a mix of alcohol and a little bit of natural herbs and then that really dramatic moment we’re always looking for that pay off.
I have my Cava and Cava is a lovely dry sparkling wine but you can easily substitute any other kind of dry sparkling wine that you like. I've used Napa Valley. I'm going to give it a little stir and then we could just bring this innocent pitcher out and you already know what it taste like the thing you have this wonderful dramatic moment where you’ve filled it up and it just has that sort of effervescence. It's appetizing. Cocktails are appetizing too and just a little sliver of that blood orange kind of hanging seductively over the glass and then to taste, wonderful and simple combination, very romantic.
