Hey everybody! It's Kim Myles and I am here to answer your big design dilemmas. So let's start today with design upgrades, DIY. Now you guys know I love to DIY everything, I think that you can put your hands on and be creative. You can even put stuff that's one of the kind, you can come up with great solutions, so let's see what you got for me.
The first question comes from Susie in Arizona. Most designers remove ceiling fans as soon as they can, what do you think? Well, Susie, I grow up in Bakersfield, California which is hot, hot, hot, hot. And I couldn't imagine life without ceiling fans. Some of us just need but that doesn't mean that have to be ugly, there are fabulous ceiling fans on the market right now. Everything from industrial ceiling fans, they are streamlined, they are slimline, they are simple, they don't make a statement and they are gorgeous in any space they always work.
Two beautiful plantation style fans, if you have that kind of decor, it really works well. So I think sometimes function and beauty have to co-exist. But no use of having a beautiful space, if you can stand to be in it because it's boiling hot. So use the fan, just make an aesthetically pleasing choice.
Next question comes from Rinne. Rinne writes, I have dark paneling, I want to either paint in a paper in, my husband loves the paneling and I am having a hard time changing his mind. What's the solution for both of us that we will be happy with? Well, Rinne, here is what you do, don't paper it because that would be a mess plus papering, you need a flat surface. Paneling, since it has this little ridges and seams in it for the panel, you are not going to like the effect.
So paint the panels, but here is how you compromise with your husband. You flip coin with your husband perhaps and you say, honey, let's paint this panel in. Pick one wall or two where you are going to choose maybe eight of the panels, eight across, ten across but a panel within the panel. Choose an accent color and paint prime first just those panels, this way you get your color, you get your sense of likeness.
He gets to keep some of that, so everybody wins. Depending on your relationship you can also reverse that, you can paint all of them and leave the accent panel to how it would look, really comes down to what works for you. You can work with that. Sometimes designing with your styles, it can be a challenge, but I know you guys will make it through. That's it you guys, good luck.
