I want to take and share with you a recipe for the Champagne Flamingo. That’s a Champagne Style Cocktail drink that you’re not going to find anywhere, and it’s one that I uncovered in one of the books in my library. It’s a Champagne drink that uses vodka and Campari.
We start out with a three quarter ounces of Campari. I actually put an ounce in there so we’re going to be careful not to pour all of it into that glass here. Campari is a very bitter Italian aperitif and a lot of people it’s a little bit too strong for them. My first time in drinking, I drink it straight and I thought it was absolutely horrible. Since then I’ve come to love it. So this is one ingredient. Like I said, we had too much there and I want to make sure not to put that much in, and then it uses vodka.
Now, three quarter ounces of vodka, since Campari is so strong, the vodka is actually coming in and softening up the flavor of the Campari to make it more palatable. That’s one of the key things that vodka does. It basically softens and dilutes the flavors.
We now take and add the ice and I'm going to stir this up. Once it’s fully chilled I can strain this into a Champagne flute and then top it off with Champagne. As a garnish we’re going to use a lemon twist. Again, notice that I’m doing the lemon twist over the top of the drink so the essential oils in the skin of the lemon peel go into the top of the glass.
On the previous episode, when we do the Champagne Cocktail, I twisted the lemon peel all around a stir stick to create a spring. This time we’re doing something different in tying it into a knot and drop in the glass. And there we have the Champagne Flamingo.
