Chang Color of Sky in Photoshop using Selective Color

Hello! So in this tutorial, I will show you how to change the color of a photo using the selective color adjustment layer. Selective color adjustment layer allows you to change a specific color in the photo. And I'm going to show you how to use it to change the color of a sky from sunrise to sunset using the selective color adjustment layer.

So first, open the selective color adjustment layer under the layer palette. Go to the bottom. You will see this icon. Click on it and select the selective color and you’ll get a menu like this. Under the color menu, you can choose the color you want to change. So, let's start with the red. Now you can add decrease cyan, magenta, yellow or black to that red. But if you're not sure which part of the picture will be affected, drag the black at the bottom to either side of the extreme and you’ll see that the red part is shifting color. And for this picture, the color of the sunlight reflected in the water, it's shifting. So that means this is the area that’s going to have the red.

So I want to darken this red by adding the black and then make it more red by adding yellow, magenta and decreasing the cyan value. And same for the yellow, drag the black back and forth to see which part is affected and increase the black, yellow, magenta, and decrease the cyan to make the yellow more red.

Now let's move on to the cyan. By dragging the black, you’ll see that part of the cloud in the sky is affected. So let's take away all the cyan, increase the magenta and yellow to give the sky a more reddish tint. And darken it by increasing the black. The same thing for blue, you have to add more to yellow, magenta and decrease the cyan and also, increase the black to make it darker.

And the next one we’re going to change is the white. The white represents all the highlights in the photo, so let's darken the sky by adding more black. Give the sky a more golden orange glow by increasing the magenta and yellow and decreasing the cyan value.

And now, we have a more golden sky. Let's skip the neutral and go to the black first. The black represents all the shadows in the photo, so let's give it a more warmer color shadow by adding magenta, yellow and decreasing the cyan. And then let's go to neutral, so when you're adjusting the black back and forth, you’ll see that almost the entire picture is affected, except the highlights and the shadow.

So this is where you want to do your final adjustment to give it an overall shade. So again, let's make it a little bit more golden orange by adding yellow, magenta, and decreasing the cyan to give that gold orange sunset color.

So after you're done, click OK when you're finished and you can always double click on the adjustment layer after if you feel like you need more adjustment later.
