See http://commons.wikim edia.org/wiki/Image: Bosch_36W_column_lou dspeaker_polar_patte rn.png (not the same speaker but all speakers have patterns like in the picture) Each image is the sound intensity at different distances and angles in front of the speaker. Notice that each frequency is very different from the others. So what you're doing when you move the mic around is essentially selecting difference frequencies to add or remove from the original (in addition to what gets added or removed by the speaker itself). In others, you've a poor man's ad hoc graphic equalizer. Still cool but not really magic.

Changing Microphone Positions on Speakers
A microphone , sometimes referred to as a mike or mic (both pronounced /ˈmaɪk/ ), is an acoustic-to-electric transducer or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal. Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, tape recorders, hearing aids, motion picture production, live and recorded audio engineering, in radio and television broadcasting and in computers for recording voice, VoIP, and for non-acoustic purposes such as ultrasonic checking.

This example visually demonstrates the changes in sound that occur as the microphone moves in relation to the speaker. As the mike position changes, you will hear the resulting sound change. All examples use the DB 57 Moving Coil Mike with Monster Studio 1000 Series Cable.
