I’m Kevin McCormally of Kiplingers with today’s tax tip. When you sit down with your tax records, it is easy to tote off the big share of contributions. You know what you give to your church or your synagogue. But don’t forget to check your pay stub for how much you gave the charity if you have payable deduction, and don’t throw away tax things by overlooking the little things like how to pocket expenses paid while doing good work, like working on a school fundraiser.
Deductions include things like parking fees, tolls, stamps, long distance phone calls, at least 14 cents a mile if you drove your own car. The rate is even higher for driving confection at the middle of flood disasters. And don’t feel chancy about what might sound like deductions.
The more you can save on your taxes, the more you can be generous this year. One final tip, if you and your husband or wife use different checkbooks, go through both registers to uncover all the contributions you made.
