Hi, my name is Brian Stevens. I am a former Insurance Agent and Financial Consultant and I want to show you how to get affordable New Jersey car insurance.
New Jersey requires you to have three types of car insurance coverage—liability coverage, personal entry protection and uninsured motorist coverage. Comprehensive and collision coverage are not required.
Liability coverage pays for the other party bodily injury and property damage expenses when you cross an accident. It also covers your legal bills if you are sued. The minimum liability coverage you must carry is $15,000.00 bodily injury liability coverage for one person, $30,000.00 bodily coverage for all persons and $5,000.00 property damage coverage.
If you do not have a lot of assets and you do not drive a lot, you may want to stick with the minimum liability coverage. However, if you do have a lot of assets, you want to get enough liability insurance to cover them in case you are sued. Personal injury protection pays for you and your passenger’s medical bills if you have accident in your car or someone else’s is car or you are walking. If you have already medical insurance, you want to get them the minimum amount of coverage.
Uninsured motorist coverage pays for repairs to your car and your medical bills if you are hit by uninsured and underinsured or a hit and run driver. Comprehensive coverage pays for damages to your car caused by fire, theft, natural disasters or vandalism. You can save money on this coverage by raising your deductible—that is the amount you are required to pay in a claim before your insurance kicks in.
Collision coverage pays for repairs to your car if you cause an accident. You can save money on this coverage by raising your deductible. Raising it from $200 to $500 will save you up to 30% on your premium.
