Host: Dr. Hasson, if you saw a baby in a hospital, you just happened to go by the nursery and you look at, what will make you think there is something wrong or something right with a normal newborn, just from a distance what all you should be looking for?
Henry Joseph Hasson: Well, whenever we examine a newborn baby, there are several things you can look at. For example, we look at the movements of the baby. The baby's arms and legs. One of the mistake that a lot of people make actually when they examining newborn baby, is they will first start poking him and try to do things then look. Actually the best thing to do originally is just to look at the baby.
Host: Good observation.
Henry Joseph Hasson: Good observation, just observation, just from a distance and watch what he is doing, watch his movements and you see if he has the normal repertoire movement, he is moving both arms and legs symmetrically. Sometimes babies will move one side more than the other or they won't move as much as they should or they move too much, more than they should.
Host: Most babies when they get to the mother they bond a little bit and they fix staring at their mother's face, is that true?
Henry Joseph Hasson: Sure, yeah.
Host: We don't see that bonding or fixation would bothering a little bit, is that true?
Henry Joseph Hasson: Yeah, I mean it's very important to look at all the features especially at the baby's eyes and how he is looking around and how is interacting with his environment.
