Kara Schafer: I am just checking babies’ vitals. Vitals are fine. This is the first set of vital signs just to make sure that everything appears to be functioning normally, and it does. We listened to his heart, we listened to his lungs and we took his temperature. We measured; we just measured the top of his head to the foot we measure just to see make sure if he is in the regular percentile for his length for this is gestational age. So, that is why we do that. See, he is about 19-1/2 inches. It is closer to 19 and a quarter. So it is about 49 cm.
And for head circumference, we do the same thing. Just go right around the head. His head is 14 inches. I know, you had a rough day, didn’t you. Babies don’t always like the bath, so, it is good to hear babies crying in the first day or so. You can all jump out of their rooms. So, that is how we are doing this, rubbing some of this. There is a little bit of blood on him from delivery and has amniotic fluid that we are trying to get off.
Typically, when the baby first comes out, we are looking at, if the babies crying. So, babies crying, it means that they he is taking in oxygen, his heart is beating, and those are the three main things that we are looking for airway, for breathing, and circulation.
Pull up his back a little bit. We didn’t have a whole lot of vertex, he was a little bit in the creases of his skin, which is a little, but now, he did not have a whole lot of vertex. So, he looks good. The hair of the new baby is very prominent, especially because he was a couple of shy of 40 weeks gestation. His skin looks terrific, a little bit of peeling and cracking, which is normal, and that will slough off a little bit in the future also, but he looks great. He looks absolutely great. Everything looks intact and he is a perfect little boy.
