Hello everybody and welcome to Wine Library TV, I am your host, Gary Vaynerchuk, and this my friends is the thunder show, aka, the internet’s most passionate wine program. And today we get so Americana up in here, even though its Italian. I mean, there really, really isn’t anything more than Americana than drinking chianti with a little parmesan cheese while watching the television.
Matt, wouldn’t you agree, that’s really, kind of like thing to do for a lot of wine drinkers, and sometime breaking it down, I’ve notice we’ve done a chianti show in almost a year, It was October of last year, last time we went on. Got to look two little chiantis, a 9 and 10 dollar chianti, always looking for value. At the end of the day, for me this show is quite a bit about finding QPR, Quality Price Ratios, and then we got a 90 pointer that everybody’s talking about right now. The antenori Peppoli, which is a 90 point spectator chianti, classico, at 18 US dollars. Hoping to find a couple of winners for today, hopefully one of the two of these that brings the thunder under 10 and hopefully the Peppoli really rocks the house and gives you an alternative, maybe for the Rufino Gold, that so many people are, in my opinion, are wasting their money on.
Also, little parmesan cheese, Matt you got them on the screen, is it making this thing happen? Little parmesan cheese action, we’ll taste some of the wines and then we’ll taste the parmesan cheese with the wine, and see if we can change anything. Also, great vaniac by the name of Mike Polsman, sent me a bunch of football and baseball cards Matt. And so what I thought we could do for a little while, coz we have so many, like four boxes over there, I thought we could open a pack each episode, maybe open a pack of a 1995 Fleer rookie set included, ’95 Fleer baseball cards. I mean, baseball players are here, let’s see what’s going on here. I thought it would be fun for all the vaniacs out there. I can kind of give them a report of what I got here. So let’s go through this, here is, and sure enough, right off the bat, a major league rookie card, prospect 1 of 10, of Garret Anderson, who is now a veteran on the play off Angels.
I was a big Garret Anderson fan, so that’s a nice little card, it’s probably worth a couple of bones there. Let’s see what else is going on here, I’ll give couple of other names, this could be a lot of fun, I think we’ll have a lot of fun with these. Who’s this guy? Rich Becker, he was a bum. Jeff Sorilo, he had a nice career. A Brewers card, Billy Brewer, he stunk. Carlos Baerga, remember him? Former Met, Baerga, look at, zoom in on this guys grill piece. Baerga was a lot of fun, and this is some classic guys. Let’s see what’s going on, Paul Assimacker, he was pretty interesting character. Brian Harvey was a good closer for it. Javier Lopez, great catcher for quite a while, that’s a nice little card, let’s save that little guy. What do we got here? Ricky Battalico, he was terrible. Enrico Brogna, huge bust, Enrico was a huge bust.
Shawn Barry, Luis Aquino, here’s little Richard Jefferson, Reggie Jefferson, yeah, he stunk. Uh oh, mister steroids himself, Mister Mark McGwire, look at big Mac there, looking pretty diesel. Bo Jackson, Bo knows chianti up in here. Conseco, I’ve got all the steroid ads, Maguire and Conseco, what a great way to start off this packs, I’m pretty excited. Eric Anthony, huge Astros, and Barola, Jerema Barola, that was an interesting pack. A very good way to start the thunder show, always going to be a lot of fun, Garret Anderson rookie card, let’s get into the chiantis.
Let’s start right off the bat with Cetumura, this comes from Coltibuono, really small, it’s not small, big producer that has been making some great wines, 90% shienzu base, 10% canolay, canolo, excuse me, 9 US dollars. Really good price for chianti, again chiantis, especially if their shienzu base have the, tend to bring a lot of rustic old world italiano to the forefront, which is a lot of fun for me. I always really enjoy these wines, at a 10 dollar price range, I think they bring some of the better value, still, even though we get a lot of garbage at 10 bones, still. 12.5 alcohol content, I like the 10 percent canolo, canole. Let’s give it a little sniffy sniff.
Now, this comes off like a little bit, like detergenty kind of, I don’t know. Little red berry, kind of weird, I don’t like this, it’s a kind of chemically on the nose, kind of off balanced. I get a little detergent action, a little bit of red berries. Opening up a little bit. Let’s give it a whirl. Come nice sour cherry, but, kind of, boring, very basic flavor profiles like standard shinzervese. I guess at 9 bones, not appalling, because it is not a crazy price point but very basic entry level chianti style wine. Not bringing any possess, no scanter flavors, I’ve seen a lot of shenzo entry stuff at 11, 12 bucks that crushed this, so that would make me say oh my god, for a couple of buck more, I wanna go there. Just a boring, very flat effort, at the end of the day, no finish whatsoever, I’m clean, like I just drank H2O, and so, you know, I’m not feeling this that much. There’s a little something on the initial attack, this is not a very good effort in my opinion. To me this is a pass, I’m a little 81 points on this wine, I mean, not too bad. I mean, I mean, I’m just kind of disappointed because I have this in the past, and I’ve liked it. To me this is one of the softer vintage of Cetamura, and, you know. I just don’t see why anybody would really want to reach out and try this and to one, there are so many other place to go.
I can’t resist, I can’t resist, Matt. So if everybody’s doing well, great reaction to yesterday’s episode, I mean, he was a great guest. We had a lot of fun, we were just chilling, anyway, let’s move on. This is now the Strozzi, 2006 chianti, 10 US dollars, this is mainly a shianzuvese as well, little canole, canolo as well. Let’s give it a sniffy sniff. This is a little fruit forward than last one, this is a little bit more balminess coming across, I get a little strawberry action up on my nose piece. Let’s give it a whirl. I get a little batter aid component, batter aid? I was trying to say battery, did I say Gatorade plus battery? Did I say batter aid? I get a little battery component, believe it or not, you know how you put your tongue on the battery, wouldn’t you, to see if it’s still alive, yeah. So I get a little battery action, I used to do that, my uncle, Bobby’s dad, actually, used to that quite a bit, I use to go, that’s not tough, I would do it and easy, you know. So I get a little battery coming through on this wine, I do get a little hint of lilac, which is fine, and enjoyable at some level, red fruit, little cranberries maybe on the mid palette. Not bad, a little bit better than the last effort, but I’m going to go 83 points on this wine. The acids off a little bit, I was looking for a little winner for you guys. You know, to me chianti is a quintessential Tuesday night pizza wine that everybody wants to have, you just sit, you know, even if you’re cold pizza laying around, you want to drink, oh, let me have a little chianti, right. Neither of these efforts brought the kind of structure, excitement that I just think there are so many culduron, wines of like pervonts, Argentinian malbach at this price point that I’ve enjoyed quite a bit more, I’m really quite disappointed by both of these efforts.
I swore, one of the two would kind of rock it out, or we have like our let’s get crazy Tuesday night pizza wine, everybody be pump, you know, Javier Lopez would be happy, I mean everything would be going well. Unfortunately, neither of these efforts are bringing any kind of thunder, little drizzle, I was probably being nice with the scores, just not good efforts. Let’s move on.
Tough, tough, tough, tough, Antinore, Peppoli, 2006 chianti classico, 90 points wine spectator, 18 US dollars, let’s see what’s going on here, let’s give it a rinse. Hopefully this Antinori can save the show today, we hadn’t an ’04 in a, seems like a decade. It’s been a while, you can giggly, you like, you’re like evil, you’re like, you’re happy with those wines are bad? I mean, just the way it goes. Now, this is great color, I mean, this has a lot more potential right off the bat, I’m really happy with the color point. Let’s give it a sniffy sniff. Kinky, darker, a little bit more of a heavy body component, which is quite interesting, I get a little black current coming through on the nose, which I like. I do get a little rustic action, which I like, a little rust, a little aluminum rust action thing. Yeah, it kind of, it kind of neat there, like an aluminum bat that has been sitting in the rain for a long time. Can aluminum get rusted? I’m not sure, I don’t think so either, right? I think that’s the thing with it, right, let’s give it a whirl. Definitely a far more interesting wine than the last two, that being precise, coz Chris I want to help you out.
I’m going 77 and 79, I was just being nice, I was in a good mood actually, I miss Matt, I’m glad to be back in the thunder seat, let’s re-correct that problem. Anyway, not by the way little side arm and gives a crap about scores, trust your own palette, try different things, don’t listen to a word I say, but for kiss and giggles. To keep it all in line, Meneses does an amazing job with that. So, anyway, great mouth feel, much silkier and smoother, I can feel the oak coming through, the oak treatment is definitely a factor on this wine. Nice fruit, black current, black berries, I like the black fruit, but I going to be honest with you, pretty hollow in the mid palette, and once again, lacking a finish, and these wines are not bringing any kind of thunder today. This is a very huge chianti let down show, let me get one more shot. It’s got good weight, I’ll give it that, and I like the polish, and I like the tenants. There are some things I like here, but at the end of the day, to me, it’s still a basic effort on the shiangaveses front, and, I just tasted a lot of wine like this at 12 to 14 dollars that’s a 87, 88 point type wine. So I’m going to score this wine 86 plus, 87 points, let’s go 87, coz it’s a solid wine, nothing wrong with it, but for 18 bones, I just can’t see myself screaming and yelling for the sake of saving the show and telling you guys, you could try this wine. To me this is an 0 for 3, pretty brutal show, I mean, the first two wines were really disappointing, and I’ll be honest with you, with all the hoopla, after the 90 point score for the Antinori Peppoli, I don’t see it bringing much thunder either.
Now, let’s hope, let’s see what happens here, I mean, this is kind of, I was hoping this will be a little enhancer. Now I’m hoping to see if the parmesan can be a savior, let’s see what goes on here now with the pairing of…What happens is that the cheese coats your tongue, put some fat on there, really can help out some of the acidity and tenants. Put a little weight to the wine over all. Sometimes there’s only so much that make up can do and you got to work on what God gave you. I just don’t see any of these three wines to be worthwhile recommendation, I did feel that the Cetamura, the first wine did benefit, like the most from the cheese, something about that combo that lifted a little bit. The second and third wine, had absolutely no impact. Nothing that I could see got me excited, I’m really kind of down. I mean my energy just plummeted, I mean, 0 for 3, but chianti did not have a good effort today, and we would be sure to do chianti show soon, to give it another shot, because, this is not going to be good for at least the people that feel they some more palette to me for these chiantis. I’ve got nothing, I mean, I’m just baffled, I thought we’d go deeper into these wines, but, they’re not cutting it, and that just the way it goes.
Question of the day, do you have a chianti that I should look at? Any, you know, can save me, can you give me a recommendation, any chianti that is out there that is worthwhile, let’s get into the thunder show, let’s save the face of chianti Matt, because I have a feeling, I might walk out today and back to Denise. You, with a little bit of me, we’re changing the wine world, whether they like it or not. See you tomorrow.
