Male Speaker: What physiologically happens when a child left in a hot car?
Jim Sears: Well, you know we are taking about heat stroke and this is the most severe form of hyperthermia and I’m going to show you an animation here that what happens when you leave a child in your car, you may not realize that within about 10 minutes the interior of the car can get hotter by about 20 degrees. So if it’s 70 degrees outside, it can get to 90 but if it’s 100 degrees it can get to 120 inside the car.
If the car is in excellent sola oven that uses the green house effect to trap the heat, so you see the sunlight goes in and heats the air inside the car through the windows but the glass is transparent to the visible light but it traps the infrared light in so it’s unable to radiate back out the heat.
So the body generates the heat as a result of the metabolism and is usually able to sweat out the extra heat but when it gets that warm, you know, in especially younger babies don’t have the ability to sweat so as the temperature rises, your body temperature you know up to over 106, 107, 108 you know it is really, really dangerous.
