First of all, you should install a carbon monoxide detector, if you have a gas stove or attached garage. Make sure to install and maintain all working fire alarms. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and plan a fire route.
It's also a good idea to assemble a first aid kit for children and to keep your doctor's phone number handy, next to the phone, as well as other emergency phone numbers.
When it comes to water safety, make sure to buy a baby bath that has non-slip grooves. If you have a swimming pool, make sure the entire area is closed off with a fence.
In the nursery, make sure the crib is sturdy with no sharp edges and try to avoid any soft or fluffy bedding that could potentially suffocate your child. Don't forget, you're going to have to change your safety techniques as your child gets older.
