Jean Phillippe: A very important resource for the communist party to control the whole of society is that it’s monopolizes the writing of contemporary history. What we have seen in countries which have democratized, is that very often it started with pluralization of narratives.
Leila: Jean Phillippe Bega is former editor in chief of China Perspective and remains on its editorial board. Welcome to watchmojo.com, I’m your host Leila, and I found out more about this interdisciplinary journal, and the role of signologist and critical intellectuals in the proliferation of knowledge relating to the Chinese world.
Jean Phillippe: It can't be as important as the existence of a critical intellectuals in China. There are a few intellectuals in China, try to gather information to make it public, there is now an unofficial movement of people who are trying to write variations of history which are different from the one by the communist party. Officially, it’s prohibited, so, if you try to publish your version of the cultural revolution, very probably you will be sent to jail or you will be harass in any way. What we can do is help to give a little more voice abroad to the people who in China are reflecting about the nature of the system. The idea of the journal is to be able to talk to scholars, but not only to scholars, the true comparitism, multi disciplinarity, we have anthropologist, political scientist, economist, historians, who try to work together to give a multi faceted view of the developments in greater China. To show that China is much more pluralistic than what’s the usual media show that there is a lot of movement in Chinese society. And our job is also to analyze the changes in Chinese society to give more information about what’s happening in China to the western public opinion and to our leaders if they want to read what are right.
