In our earlier lessons, you have been looking at various combinations of three corner chip boarders. So three corner positive boarder, three corners negative and a zigzag boarder. When we lay these all, you will notice have we drawn an extra line on the outside of each boarder 2 mm away. Well, that is for chip carvings that are straight lines to setoff the boarder.
Now, what I would like to do with these straight lines is I like to add a line that shows me the second side of my line. So, I just estimate just a little way as away from my previous line all little over millimeter and I like to draw another line right there. I am going to do the same thing on the opposite side. That is easier for me. I can follow both lines much easier that way.
And here is how to carve a straight line. Hold your knife from the first position. Form the tri-pod on your wood. Okay, thumb, point of the knife, and knuckle of your index finger. Lock your wrist towards your body, so it is locked firmly in place. And we are going to start another line closest to the boarder, so I am carving away from those previous chips.
As you carve your straight line, look ahead of your knife blade. Look slightly ahead of your knife blade and your eye will make a straight line. Do not carve off the edge of your wood, just rock it down, otherwise you will wrist slipping off and cutting yourself. Turn your board, 180 degrees and the second side of the line, same thing. Look slightly ahead again of your knife blade, right on the line and you will get nice crisp straight line to set off your border.
Let us do another one.

There you have it. That is how you carve a straight line with practice and proper technique, your lines will be straight as an arrow and people will ask you, “Did you use a straight edge to carve that line?” And you will be proud to know that you did not. All free hand, all by eye and that will be very, very straight.
