Hi, I am Mickey and this is my store in Mickey’s Hookup in Williamsburg, Brooklyn specializing in Apple computers, authorized Apple repairs, audio, video, DJ accessories and supplies. It is all here.
Digital video is everywhere, the tools are much cheaper and since the tools are so readily available, the next thing you are going to want to think about is editing software. If you are a Mac user, then you have already got iMovie is extremely solid and has been around for a few years and I have worked in classrooms and taught with it and it is absolutely the best editing system to start with.
When I first learned how to video edit, it was on two analog videotape decks and moving from there to iMovie was so easy and it is great. If you have a Windows machine, you are probably going to have Windows Moviemaker which works in the sense that it turns on. After that, it is really anybody’s guess. So in that case, I would recommend spending a little money in getting a program called Adobe Premiere. They have a new version for a CsIII so it is compatible with Mac and PC. Premiere is great. It works really well and if you are used to using things like Aftereffects and Photoshop and everything like that, you would not have any problem learning your way around it. But again, like anything I would recommend playing around with a really basic video editor like that.
One step beyond that is Final Cut Pro has very quickly become the industry standard. As long as you are working your way up the scale from easy to hard, you would not have any problems. Final Cut Pro is very solid. It gives you great options for audio and video and color correction, layering, all kinds of minor little tweaks. I have been using Final Cut Pro for five years and I always find that I am learning something new every time I use it.
One great option that Apple recently released is Final Cut Express. What is great about is for $200, you get pretty much semi pro tools that you would not have had just with iMovie. Things like color correction and things like multiple video layers and as usual all kinds of automation and changes but as with anything that is just a basic express program you are going to probably want to bump up to the pro and the great option for them is even though Final Cut Pro runs for about $1,200, the upgrade price is not quite so much.
