Chord Tone Soloing on Lead Guitar
Soloing Over Chord Progressions by Will Kriski

Hey everybody it’s Will Kriski here a little while ago I got a comment on one of my
videos from EvilChrist213 asking me about soloing over chord progressions. I’ve given it
a lot of thought and try to come up with a way that you guys could learn how to solo step-
by-step and you can really take it as far as you want. As far as complexity goes but you
saw the basic framework so you could start simple and work your way up and in the case
of this example I started with a G major chord progression so there’s 4 chords G major,
Bm, C, D is a four-chord progression. Now that’s what they call a diatonic progression all
the parts are part of the same key. So you know the question is what do you do for each
chord.
Now one of the reasons why I started— Iwant to focus on the chord tones of each chord
is that a lot of people learn how to play scales that you can just play G major scale or
your modes and you can just you know blast up and down the scales without too much
thought so I want to make sure that you guys you know hear each chord and kind of
emphasize the chord tones that you know make up that chord. It’s a little bit of different
way for rock musicians and that and to think about soloing.
So on my website I’ve got a PDF file and it has got a sort of a step-by-step approach so in
each chord you got 3 notes which make up the chord and it’s a root the third and the 5th
so I’m starting out just with whole notes playing the roots and then the third and then the
5th and then half notes you know you can do a root note and a third in each matter and
obviously you know the third is actually the most characteristic tone of one of the chord.
The root and the 5th aren’t as strong.
So I’ve started with a simple framework and then I’ve started showing how you can
expand and add a lot of notes in between but you’re still emphasizing those chord tones
and so have fun with that and if you want to know more about this you know this topic, I
hope to develop a really in depth book about this or video lessons about this topic
because it’s quite a large topic to cover but I thought this would get you going and sort of
help you focus more on the chords so have fun with that and see you next time.
