Host: From a fisherman in Galilee to a leader of man and holy man alike, chosen by Jesus thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church. Peter was presented with the keys to the kingdom of heaven and became the foundation to the Christian Church. Wherever the word of Christ spread timber, stone and glass were put together to worship the Lord. These were places of prayer.
When we think of great architecture, we can't help but think of the most famous of gothic structures, Cathedral Notre Dame De Paris, Our Lady of Paris. Over 700 years old, Notre Dame stands on a site, an island in the River Seine where the Kelts held their ceremonies. Later, the Romans built a temple to Jupiter there.
Denis McNamarra: Sure, I mean Notre Dame is the Cathedral that everybody thinks of when they think of the gothic cathedral but the French one is really the one has captured our imagination as the Archetypal cathedral.
Host: The Cathedra Notre Dame De Paris has been a part of historic events for over 700 years. 1185, Heraclius calls for the third crusade from Notre Dame. 1431, Henry VI crowned king of France; the grand lady of Paris still stands.
Stained glass windows are translucent images created with vivid jeweled colored pieces of glass held together by lead. These windows that may have at first seemed the simple lines of metal and shards of glass became wondrous pieces of art for the illiterate, a gateway to the bible and Christianity.
As artisans worked with the glass, they discovered and developed many different techniques. The glass itself was simply made using sand and silica then craftsmen realized that color could be created by mixing in metallic salts and earth oxides.
For the simple glass formula, precious gold was added to produce warm cranberry hues. The dove has served as a powerful symbol for the church representing the Holy Spirit of holy comfort. It can be seen painted on the stain glass, decorating the stone of the cloister altar and now greeting visitors and parishioners of this church whose history is as rich with meaning as the symbol of the dove.
