Christopher Nolan: The Visionary Behind The Dark Knight and Inception
Host: He quickly defined himself as a visionary and has created the gold
standard for Dark and none chronological subject matter. Welcome
to watchmojo.com and today we’re taking a look at the career of
Director Christopher Nolan.
Christopher Nolan: The story has told in as subject to the ways, we were able to do and
really tried to put the audience into the head of the protagonist.
Host: Born on July 30th, 1970 in London England; he spent his
childhood traveling to and from Chicago. At the age of only seven,
he developed a deep interest in film which was spurred by his use
of his father’s Super 8 film camera. Later, he studied literature at
University College London. Meanwhile, he devoted his free time
to shooting several small films for the school’s film society. His
early short films, such as “Doodle Bug”, gained him recognition
before he could take on his first feature “Following” in 1998.
Centered on an obsessive writer following random people, the out
of sequence narrative was designed to disorient its viewers.
Audiences were then forced to piece together the film together all
by themselves. Fortunately, its unusual structure was well
received.
As a result, the script for Nolan’s next film project “Momento”
found funding. Building on the impressive editing style of his
previous effort, the tale of a man without short term memory
astonished critics and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and
Oscar for best screenplay. As a result, it propelled his career, but
began a long collaborative writing bond with his brother. In 2002
the director helmed the highly praised remake of the film
“Insomnia.” Starring Al Pacino, the film re-told the tale of a
detective who is unable to sleep because of the never-ending
daylight of the sunny season in Alaska.
Two years later, Nolan’s ambition of directing a blockbuster led
him to convince Warner Bros to trust him to revival of the once
reputable Batman film franchise. As a result of its dark and
intelligent storyline, “Batman Begins” triumphed at the box office.
Not only sweeping numerous awards, it helped him forged a strong
relationship with actors Christian Bale and Michael Caine. He
quickly reunited with the stars for his 2006 film adaptation of the
novel “The Prestige.” Sweeping the box office with the tale of rival
magicians, he then announced his intent to return to the Batman
franchise.
In 2008 Nolan defied expectations by releasing “The Dark
Knight”, which has been hailed by many as the greatest superhero
movie ever made. Breaking numerous box-office records, the film
also brought him a nomination for best director by The Directors
Guild of America. After its stellar success, Warner Bros quickly
green lit Nolan’s screenplay for a contemporary sci-fi action flick
set within the mind called “Inception.” Before the film’s release he
was already confirmed to be returning for yet another Batman
entry and was announced as the producer of the Superman film
revival in 2012.
