Tushar Patel: That's a very important question. Cirrhosis of the liver is a situation where you have scar tissue replacing most of the liver. As a result, the ability of the liver to perform most of its functions can be affected.

There are many things that can cause cirrhosis. Most people associate cirrhosis with alcohol use. But it's important to recognize that there are many other conditions that can also cause cirrhosis, such as a chronic infection with viruses such as Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C, fatty liver disease, autoimmune diseases as well as some genetic conditions as well.
