Hi, I’m Bob Schmidt with Home Remodel Workshop.
At work today, I had a plumber who couldn’t be there for a tub delivery, a clawfoot tub. To be totally honest with you, I was kind of dreaded when I told him that my helper and I would get it up to the job site but when it was delivered I was pleasantly surprised. I’ll let you know what happened.
You can imagine how happy I was when after I’m creating and looking at this beautiful tub, me and my helper did a test lift on it and I dug on thing just about jump off the floor. This thing was made out of acrylic. It's said the shipping weight was 140 pounds but I would have a hard time believing it. It was even 90. This is the first acrylic tub that I’ve seen for as far as a stand free tub and I’m telling you as far as the appearance goes, it's beautiful. It looks just as good as a cast tub with a big difference.
Number one is, obviously the shipping and deliveries are a lot less expensive because of the weight, getting it in to your sights a lot easier where I thought I was going to have to reinforce the floor to hold the additional weight of this tub and water. There’s no reinforcement necessary for this tub. Full of water, the tub and the water weighs a maximum of 480 pounds. That’s like two of my corn fed boy helpers standing on either side.
Now, I’m not saying that acrylic tub is better than a cast tub but what I am saying is if it comes down to it and you’re doing your home project and you say, “Boy, I would sure like to have me a stand free tub but there’s no way I’m going go through all the hustle that it takes to put in a heavy cast tub.” This is an alternative to consider.
Now, I realized that I’m going to get a lot of comments for people who say, “A cast tub is the only way to go. It's worth the extra money. It's worth the extra time and effort to get it in.” And I guess the only thing I can say is it matters on what you’re going to use the tub for.
If what you’re going to use the tub for is just to take a daily bath, jump in, do your bathing and get out. That’s fine then I would believe that an acrylic tub would be fine but if you’re going to use this as a form of luxury, where you’re going to sit in the tub for a long time and soak, maybe with a scented candle and a good book. It's commonly known that a cast tub will hold heat and distribute heat a lot longer than an acrylic tub.
So, if that’s your intention, if that’s what you’re going to use it for but it's like my leather chair is will be this cast tub to you then you may want to consider going to the extra expense of getting a cast tub. But, as far as we’re getting in and ease of installation, an acrylic tub is the way to go.
