Club Defense Techniques in Kempo
My name is William Samson and I'm here with Jovani Pride and we’re going to be illustrating for you some basic fundamentals of club defense. A club is a basic term that’s used for any kind of blunt instrument. It could be a long stick. It could be a short stick. It could be a bottle, a pipe. So for today’s purposes, we’re going to actually be using a longer stick because it’s a little bit more difficult to defend against. So I'm going to put this over to the side.
Basically for someone to hurt you with a club, they’re going to need to use a circular type of attack. And they’re going to need to have a very large motion to do damage to you. If I want to strike towards your body, I'm going to have to get my entire body behind it and I'm going to have to use generally a fairly large circle to be able to create damage to his body. And generally, your three basic angles of attack are going to be overhead. They’re going to be around the side or possibly even a backhand attack even though that most likely isn't going to happen.
So I'm going to strike. The most important thing to remember is one of the main things about kempo is that the idea of a line defeat is a circle and a circle defeats a line. If you have to attack me with the circle, I'm going to defeat it by using a line to get to him. So if he comes out with me with an overhead move, I'm moving in quickly so that I'm catching him before the circle can get to me. If he wants to come out with me with a side move go, I'm going to move and again, in a straight line as possible so I can get to him with my line before his circle gets to me. If he wants to come at me again with the backhanded move, he comes in. Again, I want to stop his arm so that I'm using that line to get in before his circle gets to me.
Ideally if I can help it, I would like to use two arms in each defense, just because of the amount of force that I'm going to be stopping. So he swings at me over the top of the head, my arms are going to come together and across motions just like this and hopefully stop his arm up early. If he comes at me around to the side, I'm going to stop him at the biceps as well as at his wrist. And if he comes at me with the back of his arm, I'm going to be putting my arms like this. And know that every single time that I do this, my hands are in tight fist because it tenses up all the muscles in my arms. And keeps my hand in the safe as possible position. And finally come back to your fighting sense again. I would like to keep my eyes around this general area of his body.
When I watch this area of his body, it’s going to cue me into anything he’s about to do. And I have to make sure that I act the moment he saw much as twitches. So it's a pride. You're going to choose overhead or side to swing in towards me. Go ahead and then launch forward. Again, now launch forward. And I watch the center of his body go; launch forward, go, launch forward, cut.
