Jon: I am Jon from New York. Can cocaine abuse really knocks your nasal septum? Suzaane Thomas: In addition to be in a very addictive substance, cocaine is a basal constrictor. What that means is it shrinks the blood vessels that supply nutrients and oxygen to the tissues. So when you snort cocaine, cocaine sits on the nasal membrane and it causes those blood vessels to shrink. As a result, the nasal membrane doesn't get the oxygen and the nutrients it needs, so that can cause damage. In essence Jon, cocaine doesn't melt the nasal septum, but it kills it through starvation. The other thing that we know is that cocaine is typically cut with other substance, a lot of those we have no idea what they are. It might be baking powder, it might be baby powder, it might be something more caustic because of that when you snort that entire substance, some of those materials can also cause damage to the nasal septum because they are caustic in and of themselves.
