Coco Chanel - Profile

A pioneer of the fashion world, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel or Coco Chanel as she is better known was born August 19, 1883. After several affairs with some very wealthy and generous gentlemen, she was able to open her own shops selling ladies hats in 1910 in Paris and after only a year in business, she was able to move her shop to the fashionable Rue Cambon. In 1921, she launched the fragrance Chanel No. 5 which today remains as one of the most popular fragrances out there. In 1923, the Chanel suit made its debut with a knee-length skirt and trim, boxy jacket made of woven wool and black trim and gold buttons worn with large costume pearl necklaces. Coco also made the little black dress popular showing its wide array of versatility depending on how it was accessorized. Coco Chanel passed away in 1971 and early 80’s Karl Lagerfeld was hired as the new designer for Chanel. He now incorporates modern designs with the already established classic Chanel look.
