Coffee, Soda and Dehydration

Lexi: My name is Lexi, and I am from Brewer Maine. And my question is does coffee and soda dehydrate you?

Roberta Lee: Well Lexi, coffee and soda are very dehydrating if they have caffeine in it. Caffeine tends to make the kidneys want to eliminate more water. But I think there is another problem with soda that we need to be aware of and that is that it can tend to leach the body's calcium and for all of us who have to worry about bone density 20 years down the line or in later years this can be a real risk. I will say this though. Coffee has recently been shown to have some health benefits. It has been shown to improve type 2 diabetes lessen by 24% liver fibrosis and actually reduce your risk of Parkinson's.
