Colds and Humidifiers

Bianca: Hi, my name is Bianca. I am from Palm Harbor, Florida. My question is many parents use humidifiers in their young childrens’ rooms when they have a cold. Do they really do any good?

Melissa Mcneil: Bianca, that’s a really good question because certainly that’s the kind of information that you get from your pediatricians or you’ll find in any of the Self-Help Manuals. And in fact the reason you get that information is because they do make a difference. The difference they make is not so much and whether your child will get better faster but it helps your child feel more comfortable.

They are full of nasal congestion and they are breathing through their mouths and their mouths were dry. We give them medications to help dry up their nose and that dries up their mouth so they are just uncomfortable. If you humidify the room they can breathe easier, their mouth doesn’t get dry, their throats not sore, they’ll sleep better, you’ll sleep better and it’s a good win all around.
