Corey: I am Corey from Atlanta, and I want to know why you have a runny nose, when you have a cold.

Dr. Mark Fendrich: Well Corey, we know a lot about the common cold and not everything though. It turns out that these viruses impact a large part of our bodies including many aspects above our neck, giving us headaches, sneezing as well as runny noses. And I think the main way to explain the runny nose with the viral infection that comes with the common cold is that the body is really trying its best to protect itself or fight off that infection, and that battle takes place believe it or not right in the middle of your nose. So as the infection comes in, the body's defense systems come to bat, and you'll see a reaction that's often coming out your nose into a tissue.
