A high school student’s greatest competition getting into college is what I would like to call saming. In other words, you got to be competing against other students who have the same grades, SAT scores, same everything. How are you going to stand out?
Well, I always like to have a parent imagine a student as a little brown box. It is going down the college conveyor belt towards the admissions office and the admissions people are noticing that there 5000 other little boxes look just like yours and 5000 other little boxes behind yours look the same. They are all the same. How do you stand out? How do you get to noticed? Well, you got to tie a little red ribbon around your box. How do you do that? Let me give you an example among so many.
Student goes to a teacher to ask for a letter of recommendation and basically says something like this, “You know, I was watching some old guy on my computer the other day and he said, I had to reminisce my insaneness!” And the guy says, “What are you talking about?” You say, “Look, I cannot have that standard letter of recommendation that you write for everybody else. You know, with all the platitudes mixed in with all these qualities that you think I have. I do not want to be a part of that same routine looking like everybody else. I need to have you write a little story about one character trait that you like, that you admired me.”
And colleges really like stories, so there is a dimension about the student that colleges really like to see that they are not used to seeing in the form of stories.
So there is a very valuable tip that you can use right away. And if you would like to have other valuable tips and a series of free videos which I provide on an ongoing basis, go to my web site right now at www.videocollegedad.com and the theme of those videos is “easier ways to get in to college and easier ways to afford it”. So go to that site right now and I will be talking to you in the months ahead. I am Paul Camphill.
