Back in 1998, a film came out called Pleasantville. And the film was shot in black and white. But, they did something interesting with that. As part of the story, when the characters in the film became enlightened, things started appearing in color. So in the film, we had a lot of objects that were black and white and then in the same frame, we had some objects that were in color. It was a very neat effect. It is something that maybe has been a bit over used since then. But today, I am going to show you how to separate single colors on your videos using Final Cut Pro. I do want to point out what I am about to show to you. It must be done at Final Cut Pro. It is not available in Final Cut Express, so let us take a look in Final Cut Pro and see how we are going to separate colors like this.
Okay, I am now in Final Cut Pro and what I have done here is I have got a clip of a pretty girl. And she has got red flowers all around her head. She has got some red lips. And what we want to do here is isolate the red color. So only the red will show and everything else will turn black and white. And here is how we are going to do it. We are going to go over here and click on effects. I am going to go to video filters, color correction, and I will select the color corrector 3-way. Grab this guy, drag him down to the clip and then we are going to go up here and click on the color corrector 3-way. By limit effects, we want to come down here, click, and this twirl down. We want to go over and select our eyedropper. And we got a lot of different colors of red going on here so I am going to just kind of pick one right there.
Now, we want to go down to this guy, the invert selection. Click him, go over to saturation and I will pull this across. And as I am pulling it across, you can watch her over here. You are starting to get sicker and sicker. I pull it all away across and well, you know what, we have got some red but it is not looking too good. So how can we fix this? Well here is what to do. For your saturation of Lumina, you want to come over and uncheck each of these. When we do that, you can see, well now, it is looking a lot better. But, there is still some fine tuning to do. So, we just go up here to our color bar. Click on the top and drag it ever so slightly. And maybe just a little bit more, and just like that. And we have made her black and white. Her lips red and we have kept the red flowers in Final Cut Pro. I am David Kaminski of Web Video University.
