Female: Today, Coach Kendra will show us how we can get relief from heartburn, constipation and diarrhea with diet and exercise.
Coach Kendra: Digestive health is intimately linked to what you eat. After all, the digestive process is what breaks the food that you consume into energy and nutrients. Most people who were concerned about their digestive health are worried about a particular problem such heartburn, diarrhea or constipation. Each of these conditions has a slightly different nutritional need.
People with heartburn are quick to blame their woes on what they eat but the real culprit is often the way they eat. Two quick ways to get your heartburn in check are to eat less food in each sitting and to avoid eating right before you go to bed. Well, some people ultimately find that certain foods can cause heartburn for them no matter what. Many others discover that heartburn can be avoided without eliminating their favorite dishes.
Yoga can also be used to help relieve heartburn. Sitting on the floor, bring your heads overhead. Each time you inhale, sit taller and as you exhale, lean over your legs. This pose is great for digestion and can decrease your heartburn.
Almost everyone experiences constipation at some point in their life. The first thing to do is to increase your fiber intake by eating more fruits, vegetables and grains. Fiber helps form soft, bulky stools to increase your regularity. Drinking six to eight glasses of water and walking for 20-30 minutes each day can also help get things moving.
There are also some yoga moves that can help with constipation. Sitting on the floor, cross your foot over your knee and gently twist to your side. Keep both cheeks of your tush on the floor and sit very tall. This stretch twists the midsection and helps to get things moving.
For people who are suffering from diarrhea, what you eat and drink can affect how long it takes to get better. Until you have been well for several days, stick to a low fat, dairy-free diet with bland foods like toast and rice. Also, make sure your drink plenty of water because diarrhea dehydrates you and you will need to replace lots of fluids.
For additional relief from diarrhea, you can try a little Yoga. Kneeling, gently lean back, taking your fingers behind your hips and lift your chest. Try to keep your knees on the floor. For a more advanced version of this stretch, place your elbows on the floor. This stretch is great for calming an upset stomach.
If these digestive ailments persists for more than a couple of days or you experience fever, chills or any other unusual symptom, please make sure to see a doctor right away.
