For most of us working in the yard is a way to escape the stresses of our daily rat race. But gardening is not exactly worry free. There are a couple of tips, whether you are just getting started or you have been gardening for years that will make the whole experience a lot safer. First of all, don’t forget the sunscreen, use at least an SPF of 15 or higher and put everywhere and anywhere that is going to be exposed to the sun. Secondly, it is always a good idea to have a hat around.
Warming up with some stretches is also important. You’d be surprised how rigorous a couple of hours of gardening can really be. To prevent sprains and strains, keep your body straight and erect while shoveling or raking, and also bend at the knees when picking up objects. Your back will thank you in the morning. Every gardener loves their power tools, and I am no exception. Keep in mind that if it has a motor, it has spinning parts and those parts can either pull you towards the motor, or the motor towards you. So you want to avoid using clothes that are to baggy, and also, if you have long hair, pull it back and out of the way.
While the engine is running, earplug, or headphones and goggles should be on. And if it specially dusty, wear a mask, sure the neighbors might stare but safety is always priority number one. It’s fine in the sun, but don’t forget to take breaks, sit back, enjoy your work. And most importantly is probably water, keep a bottle of these nearby and when the heat is on you will stay hydrated. With tips for a healthier home, I’m Jay Baker.
