We want to talk a little bit about the common injuries that we are going to find in specific sports and first one we are going to talk about is Football. And football as a collision sport has its' own group of injuries that we are going to see. Some of the things that you are going to find or are fairly common associated with Football would be bruises, contusions, where it's a direct blow to the area and the surface of the skin, the muscle, the bones are bruised and painful.
Another important thing that we will see sometimes is a stinger or burner. And one of the things you'll find a lot of times is that the head will get out of position and the athlete would have the head taken away with the arm extended. And now stretch the nerve as it runs out through the arm and they will complain about a burning sensation all the way down into the hand and fingers. And that's one that's important that we pay attention to. If the athlete doesn't have the strength to be able to keep his arm up and do its normal function, we really want to make sure that we don't let that athlete go back and get on the field until they are really ready.
Now we see a fair number of ankle sprains, we see some knee injuries, especially, some plant and turn type injuries including some cartilage tears; sometimes even to the point where there will be an ACL injury. And we want to make sure that if an athlete comes in complaining of a knee injury, specifically that, we have that looked at by a Sports Medicine Professional, someone who knows what they are doing and taking care of it.
The other thing that we really have to be concerned within collision sports are concoctions and there is a lot of little literature that's been out lately talking about concoctions and when a child is really injured or not. And we really want to make sure that, that athlete if they complain about hitting their head and they are a little bit light headed, they are a little bit dizzy, that we really take the time to make sure that they are okay, and not let them return to play until they have been cleared and someone has followed up on that head injury.
The head injury itself is significant; what we found is even more significant is that if there is a second head injury before the first one has healed completely, that athlete could be at a great risk for pretty serious damage. So not wanting to play around with; we want to get that looked at by a medical professional as soon as possible.
