Welcome to Common Man Cocktails. I’m your host Derrick Schommer. Today, we’re going to do something cool, something new, some thing I invented.
This is going to be called The Common Man’s Crimson Sky. And the reason is; I think it’s kind of crimson. Good reason, right? We’re going to use a lot of cool ingredients. Now, this took awhile in the balance out to the way I wanted it. My goal was I wanted to exploit the POM Wonderful pomegranate juice because I like it a lot. I like pomegranates. I like to eat the seeds. Buy them and just stuff them in my mouth and just bite down and get all the juices to explode. It’s awesome.
I also decided we’re going to put some simple syrup in here. My simple syrup is kind of gone so I don’t have my little simple syrup bucket and I’ve got to make some more of that but I have this De Paz Cane Syrup. You’ll see this again very soon. So that’s your simple syrup for today, crème de banana kind of I like it.
I wanted banana, cherry and pomegranate. That was my core ingredients. So I’ve also bought some Cruzan Black Cherry rum. Cruzan is like I think historically one of the first rum companies to start really going in and punching into the flavors of rum, like flavored rums with different styles. You can go to mixdrinkipedia.com to find out all the information on Cruzan.
Pineapple juice because I like pineapple juice. Little lime juice that’s really to add to the sugar, balance it out well because I found that it needed a little more substance, a little more dynamics in that direction and that’s pretty much it and I’m going to put all these into a high ball glass with ice already in there. I’ve got my ice and my shaker and I’m ready to go so that I can mention this contest that we’re going to be starting today.
This is going to include a coupon for a 16-ounce POM Wonderful. I think that’s about the Two Bottom Bubbles I think is a 16-ounce. We’ve got to see in the store. It’s going to be for the United States; for Canada. Whoever wins; there’s going to be three winners for this contest and you’re going to have to answer the question; do you use POM Wonderful in your cocktails? If not, why? Answer truthfully, if you don’t. I just want to know. And the winner will be randomly drawn at the end of the month is going to win one of these cool pourers courtesy of POM Wonderful and a coupon which they will send you in the mail that you’re going to use at a retail store and you’ll be able to get that and this for free from me and POM Wonderful. So that’s kind of cool.
So let’s get started with this drink. If the pourer’s rolling, you throw them. So we’re going to start by adding in our ingredients in the order in which I specify. It really makes no difference at all. I’m going to have a garnish, by the way. I’m just going to use a little lime because I’ve got lime in here so I figured it would be a good idea.
So we’ll start with a half ounce of lime and we are going to do a half ounce of simple syrup also known together as sweet-sour; sweet-sour, no I’m thinking of Chinese food restaurant. Yeah, it is sweet-sour mix, isn’t it? They call it sweet-sour mix, sweet and sour mix, it’s basically is sweet with sour. That’s really a homemade sweet sour mix right there. We’ll do the POM Wonderful. So what we’re going to do for POM Wonderful is 1.5 ounces.
Recently, I put two ounces and I find it to be a slight bit acidic and a little dry if you like that. Like if you could almost drink this POM Wonderful straight which I can, I found that this was a better dynamics for a larger group of people. And I’m going to do a 3/4 ounce of banana which is just enough to hint at the banana, to kind of cut through some of the pomegranate with out overdoing it. I didn’t want a banana drink. We’ll do 1.5 ounces of the Cruzan black cherry rum because it’s awesome and I wanted to make this really the alcoholic choice in the drink. And then an ounce of pineapple juice to add a little bit of texture. It adds a little bit of cool tropical taste to it, you get the black cherry, you get the pineapple, and you get the pomegranates. It’s like you’re in Hawaii or Jamaica or an island that has rum and sugar cane. I don’t know. It’s just awesome. Now, we’re going to shake this all up. Let’s see if I could do this without spilling it on myself. That seems good.
I’m really proud of this drink mainly because I had envisioned of what I wanted to taste like and it actually came out to be pretty close to what I thought all the flavors together might be. I’m also a huge fan of the Collins glass. Did I call it a high ball glass before? This is not a high ball glass. It’s high but it’s not as high as the high ball glass; my bad. So this is a Collins Glass I like this Collins glass so I chose that as the option because it shows off the cool color which I’m going to call Crimson. It could be a little purplish. Right now it seems to be pink because I aggressively gave it a good shake. I liked all these ingredients. I liked the design of the Collins glass and so I figured to put all those together and this would be the recipe I like since I invented it, I’ve got to like it. Let’s give it a try.
First, it smells like black cherries and that’s so nice. This is like juicy-juice or a juice that’s got maybe fakey-fake sugars to it but not too sweet because the last finish is a little dry and acidic. You’re getting something that would work great before dinner; on the porch. It’s not super sweet so you’re not going to feel like a little sick stomach. It’s not sour so you’re not going to get a puckered face. It’s got a lot of fruits.
It bounces it away where you’re just really getting all the fruits. You get your bananas, your pineapples, your cherries, your pomegranates all right up in your grill; little sweetness, a little sour; just enough. So, that my friends, is the Common Man Crimson Sky or Common Man’s Crimson Sky because I like to create all the drinks that Common Man’s mark anything brandy. Crimson, I think it’s crimson, right? I think it is a little green on the top. There you go.
