A dual core should be sufficient if you plan to. The Quad Core CPU maybe useful for video-audio graphics rendering, rendering in multiple instances simultaneously, performing heavy multi-tasking, performing continuous large scale encryption, compressing or decompressing large files, running VM ware, running a traffic heavy server, falling at home or saddy, benchmarking, running professional 3D modeling software, etcetera.
If you’re interested in a Quad Core CPU or on a tight budget and want to optimize the performance of your system per dollar then be sure to do your research into this specific software that you intend to use, to verify whether it utilizes more than two cores. Dual cores will offer a much higher frequency per dollar versus Quad Core CPUs and programs that aren’t multi threaded will perform the same on a dual versus the quad when at the same frequency. Also dual core CPUs require less power and produce less heat and quads which usually means a higher possible over clock and a lower overall power bill.
However more software is being programmed to take advantage of multiple cores offering better future proofing of your system with the Quad Core CPU but if you don’t see a need for a quad in the immediate future and plan to upgrade your system in the next 5 or 6 years, then a dual core CPU is probably your best bet.
