Comparison Between VW GTI and 2010 Mazda Mazdaspeed3
Hi! This is Joe Bruzek from Cars.com. We’re here with two performance hatchbacks that
are new for 2010, the Mazdaspeed3 and the Volkswagen GTI. We’re going to compare
styling, how they drive and interior quality and let you know which one is the better daily
driver.
The hood scoop, chiseled fenders and low to the ground stance really distinguish the
Mazdaspeed from the plain Jane GTI. This spoiler is just icing on the cake. As far as
exterior styling, the GTI is more aggressive than the regular Golf but that isn’t saying
much.
Even though the Mazdaspeed3 is a clear winner on the outside, on the inside, there are
some problems. For example, the seat isn’t that comfortable for supportive and at the
backseat, it’s really tight.
In the GTI, the interior quality is much more consistent and everything has a much nicer
feel to it. The driver seat has much more support and cushions around the side bolster that
the Mazdaspeed3 does not have. In the backseat, there is actually room for adults.
Both cars are fun and preppy but the Mazdaspeed3 has the power advantage and really
feels stronger. There is a little turbo lag but once the turbo kicks in, it really scoots.
The GTI does not have the turbo lag of the Mazdaspeed3. It’s a very consistent power
band through the RPM range but it doesn’t pull this hard. It doesn’t feel like it accelerates
just fast. But what you do get is better melt down.
While the speed3 has the edge in styling and performance, the GTI is the better daily
driver. With its edge in comfort, quality and gas mileage, it’s worth the extra $2,000.00.
