Considering Advair and Symbicort Combo Asthma Inhalers
Male: Two major combined medication of asthma, Advair and Symbicort. They have a little danger warning about it. Why is there any concern?
Alfin G. Vicencio: Well there was some concern because of this combination medications have a combination of an inhaled corticosteroid which is a good controller medication and what’s called the long-acting beta-agonists which beta-agonists are typically thought of this as rescue medications. In this case, the long-acting beta-agonist helps keep the airways open or dilated for a prolong period of time as compared to the short-acting medications. And that was the medication. The long-acting beta-agonist was the medication that some people have concerns with as far as increasing the risk of asthma related deaths.
And most of the studies were actually done with the use of those medications not in conjunction with the --
Male: So, they have that little concern, you should never take this medicines if you’re in the middle of an attack. It should be taken all the time but don’t start in the middle of an attack because that’s when the danger comes.
Alfin G. Vicencio: Right, right. That medication -- it’s very important to understand that that medication is supposed to be used as a controller medication and not a rescue medication.
Male: Because Advair in particular there were some concern of death because some people would take it in the middle of the attack and the reason of death could be the medicine could have create the opposite response or you’re going to delay getting to the emergency room because you’ve taken the medicine and waiting too long ago to the ER. So that alone says if you’re not in control, think why you’re out of control. So down the around, you don’t get to that situation. That’s what these medicines are met for. So you don’t have that question brought up, is that true?
