Mark Taylor: Hi, it's Mark here; this is part of our Business Series, a short set of videos where we are going to talk about some of the concepts for business success.
In today's short video we are going to be talking about public relations or PR. So what are the things you need to know about PR? Well, first of all it's an often untapped area of business. A lot of people think it's difficult to get, and tend to focus on sales and marketing, intent on sales and marketing, but if you can get some good PR it can be one of the most effective, and of course free ways of advertising and very powerful as well, because people often are going to listen into the paper rather than a promotional piece you might do from your own company.
So a question they would ask is, how do you actually get into PR? It's around the mindset you have on it, and getting into the heads of a journalist and also the readers of articles and magazines you are going to try promoting to. So first of all, you need to work out which magazines, articles, publications, that are relevant for what you have.
Then you need to start thinking about what type of things might get a story. So you need to get into the mind of a journalist. It's not an avenue for you to set your company, but you need to be giving the journalist something that they could make into a story.
So a good example of this is, ordinary people are doing extraordinary things. So people like to read about things that they might be able to achieve, that other people like themselves have achieved, have become successful. That's a great storyline. So have a think about any angles you can achieve on that side.
The other area that people look for is talking to experts. So if you can find yourself a position or a niche in the market where you become the expert, then you can actually get some great PR with becoming the expert in the area and journalists would then start coming to you and asking for commentary, and there's nothing better than being an expert in a field to attract the right sort of success for your business.
So you need to understand journalism, you need to get access to journalists, and you need to find an angle by which they will actually be interested in what you have. It's about the stories that you give, the angles for the readers, becoming expert, and not about selling your business specific to it, that won't get you very far.
So don't ignore public relations, it can be really powerful, and think of those different concepts we have just talked about. Thanks a lot.
