Walkman WSKY#9. What Should You Know. I am Ethan Block, at What Should You Know. What should you know, you are watching what should you know because let's be honest what should you know. So, someone comes up to you then like, hey, you know about corn-based ethanol? Basically, you should say, of course, I know about corn-based ethanol. Are you serious? But before we get to the corn-based ethanol, let's talk about ethanol for a second, another word for moonshine. In fact purified ethanol is classified at 200 proof and if you drink it, you will definitely be going blind.
But what's the big deal about ethanol? It turns out can be burn in a combustion engine that can make car, plane, bus and train go. First time ethanol was used in a car, believe it or not, 1908 Henry Ford's Models T couldn't run on ethanol, but then prohibition kicked in and the gasoline became much cheaper than ethanol. We didn't really hear it again until the 70s and then today it's blown up. It's being told as the ultimate savior for the United States addiction to oil. Problem being is that U.S. Ethanol is derived from the corn and using the food for fuel has got to be one of the dumbest ideas ever.
Let me ask you something real quick. Would you rather be able to drive your car or would you rather be able to eat? Already over the past two years corn prices has doubled and most of this doubling can be attributed to the increase use of corn for fuel, and even crazier than that. I know that's so crazy, but even crazier than that. Even if we use the entire United States as corn harvest to produce ethanol, it would replace just 12% of our gasoline appetite and would squeeze supplies of corn fed cows, pigs and chickens, because they eat that stuff to grow big and strong. Corn flex, they will be gone to seeYa, seeYa, seeYa. Not only will we be trashing ethanol, I think it's great that we are thinking about alternative fuels, but the bottom line is corn-based ethanol not so smart.
